A Guide To Popular Attractions in Varanasi

Varanasi, popularly known as Banaras, is one of India's most ancient and historic cities. This spiritual capital of India resides on the banks of the holy river Ganges and is home to several ancient temples, ghats, and other tourist attractions. The city is rich in its spiritual heritage and serves as a fascinating tourist destination for travelers with a keen interest in delving into Indian mythologies and religion.

Walk by the beautiful ghats, experience a rejuvenating bath, or admire the mesmerizing sunset view, Banaras has got much more than you can think. The city is older than any tradition and every generation. Unlike the metro cities which feature sky-scrapers, contemporary cafes, fancy restaurants, and urban development, the glory and true essence of Banaras resides in the time-worn buildings, narrow streets, and the beautiful river Ganges. Since the city has an extensive history and a few beautiful places for exploration, it welcomes thousands of tourists and pilgrims each year. Here are a few best attractions which must not be left unattended when in Banaras:

Kashi Vishwanath Temple

Amongst the most visited and leading temples of India is the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. One of the 12 Jyotirlingas, Kashi Vishwanath is dedicated to the Mahakaal or Lord Shiva and welcomes thousands of devotees each year. The temple is also famed as the Golden Temple of Varanasi as its domes are coated with gold. The temple features intricate carvings on its structure and has a well Jnana Vapi or the Well of Wisdom which only permits entry to Hindus. Within the temple premises are the idols of other deities such as Kaalbhairav, Vishnu, Virupaksh Gauri, Vinayaka, and Avimukteshwara.

Dashashwamedh Ghat

Though Varanasi houses several beautiful ghats, one of the most famous is the Dashgashwamedh Ghat. The Ghat is mostly crowded and has a spiritual significance as it is believed that Lord Brahma performed the Dash Ashwamedh sacrifice on this Ghat. You can enjoy the mesmerizing sight of the Ganga Aarti performed every evening at this ghat. On checking the top attractions in Varanasi India tourism website you will find this Ghat amongst the leading city attractions.

Asi Ghat

If you have a keen interest in photography, then Asi Ghat is the place for you. You can enjoy capturing the scenic view of the sunrise and sunset at this Ghat which is less crowded than the others. Built at the confluence of River Ganga or Varuna River India and River Asi, the Ghat is famed for the huge idol of Shivlinga installed under a Peepal Tree. Do not forget to seek blessings from Lord Hanuman at the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, situated by the River Assi.

Vishwanath Gali

Vishwanath Gali is a narrow lane that buzzes with locals and tourists. Lined with shops selling local street food, sweets, brass idols of deities, home decor goods, household items, and more, Vishwanath Gali is a must-visit if you wish to purchase a few souvenirs on your way back.

Kedar Ghat

Enjoy a refreshing and rejuvenating bath in the holy water of the river Ganges at Kedar Ghat which has a spiritual significance. The Ghat is considered to be cleaner than the others and its ideal for bathing and offering prayers to Shiva at the Kedareshwar Temple. The quaint and peaceful surroundings at sunrise will give you a dose of relaxation for spending a busy day in Banaras.
