Revisiting the Lost Art & History of The Pink City

Welcome to Jaipur, a place where fine art and architecture meet the convenience of modern amenities. This beautiful capital of Rajasthan is a great choice for those of you who want to delve deep into the history and culture of India’s glorious past. This monumental city is dotted with majestic forts, grand palaces, enriching museums, palatial hotels and more. There is a lot to do and discover in the beautiful Pink City of India and you can also explore some unconventional Jaipur India tourist attractions.

One such lovely attraction is located near the famous Birla Mandir and is a beautiful center that was built to preserve Indian arts and culture. Make your way to the enriching Jawahar Kala Kendra and embark on a journey of discovering the diverse cultural beauty of Rajasthan.

The Intriguing Architecture

The architecture of this beautiful arts center has an interesting story to tell. Conceptualized by the notable artist Charles Correa,  the structure is built in red sandstone and its design resembles the Navgraha from Indian astronomy and also draws inspiration from the city plan of Jaipur. This design is beautifully depicted through the different sections of the arts center like theaters, galleries, library and even the coffee house.

Exploring the Venue

There are three different galleries where many artists have showcased their work and there is also an adjoining space where budding artists practice to master their crafts. Alankar Museum deserves special mention for its authentic collection of traditional Rajasthani artifacts.  Walk through the hallways of these beautiful art galleries and museum as you listen to the melodious tunes of the somber music in the background.

Theater and drama bring art to life as you get a front seat to the beautiful depictions of enchanting tales. Choose to visit any or all of the three theaters with each offering you a different experience. One of these is an open-air theater known as Madhyavarti which features traditional stepwell-style seating, the other is a closed modern theater, Rangayan and Krishnayan that hosts private performances.

Bring out the bookworm in you and head to their massive library which is home to over 20,000 different books and journals and also has a separate section of books for the little ones. You can also sign up for an interesting activity or become a part of their book club and share your love for books with a great group.

Step out to the Shilpagram and get a glimpse into the rural life of different parts of Rajasthan like Kota, Bikaner, Sikar, Jaipur and more. Lastly, you can stop by their coffee shop which forms a part of the lunar section and depicts interesting trivia about astronomy. Enrich yourself as you relish their delectable treats with a refreshing cup of coffee.

Essentials to Keep in Mind

Entry to the arts center is free and it is open throughout the year and every day of the week. However, the best time to visit would be somewhere between September and December when you don’t have to take the brunt of the scorching heat. Check out their annual festival dates to make the most of your visit here.
