Exploring Top Tourist Hotspots in Chandigarh
Being one of the first
planned cities in India, Chandigarh embodies and extends the spirit of idealism
to its bustling sectors, luscious green belts and exuberant culture.
Distinguished for its intricate architecture and rapid urbanisation, the city
has no qualms about boasting its beauty, going as far as to call itself 'City
Beautiful'. A trip through India is widely deemed to be deficient if Chandigarh
doesn't find its place in one's itinerary. To ensure that no one calls you out
for it, we have compiled a list of the most visited Chandigarh touristplaces.
SUKHNA LAKE
An inseparable part of
Chandigarh, no tour of the city is complete without its inclusion. It's
inevitable to leave unrewarded from this visit, as the lake's mirror-like
surface draws you in, and conveys unparalleled peace. The lake's boundaries
court photographers and busy painters capturing faces and scenes, a gym and a
promenade to mingle with nature. Visiting the lake during the right months,
whether monsoon or winter, bears its fruits in the form of storks, cranes and
Siberian ducks.
ROCK GARDEN
Despite it being built
by Nek Chand Saini in his spare time, the garden holds his heart in its
sculptures of waste and scrap, discarded throughout the city by all, treasured
only by one. Nek Chand, who started his dream to recycle rejected materials
from demolition sites around the city into pieces of art in 1957, never
imagined that these rejects will soon be heralded as national riches. Beauty's
in detail, proclaim the garden's broken pipes, bangles, bottles, tiles, sinks
and electrical waste, positioned in walled corridors. Also, don't forget to
check Rock Garden of Chandigarh on their website.
ZAKIR HUSSAIN ROSE
GARDEN
Spread over 30 acres of
land, the rose garden is home to 50,000 rose bushes across 1600 species.
Distinguished for being Asia's largest garden, the garden also halls medicinal
trees for numerous illnesses. It is advised to visit the garden during the
flowering season, guidance forfeited only by those who are keen to miss out on
its beauty. February and March are considered the best months for a visit as a
major cultural event, Rose Festival, is hosted to celebrate the garden's
magnificence.
JAPANESE GARDEN
Located in Sector 31,
Japanese Garden stands out for its ability to transport tourists across the
globe to Japan without moving their feet. With its pagoda towers, mesmerising
waterfalls, a meditation centre, lustrous golden bamboo and a Buddha idol, the
garden uses elements of Japanese architecture to give the place a touch of
Japan. Finding some peace of mind in the lap of nature is all that this garden
is about.
CHANDI MANDIR
At the very core of
Chandigarh lies Chandi devi, with the city's etymology being derived from the
Goddess. Visited by thousands during Durga Puja, the temple provides a
spectacular backdrop of Shivalik hills. The temple is located at a convenient
distance of 10 km from Mansa Devi shrine, easing the tourists eager to visit
both.
