Underrated Marvels in Egypt

Having witnessed the emergence of one of the world’s oldest civilizations, Egypt is studded with a string of extraordinary fixtures and enduring landmarks. Spanning centuries, these evocative gems have elevated the country’s historic grandeur, with slivers of bygone cultures and traditions peeking through their antiquated folds even today. While there are plenty of famed sites to keep you occupied, here are a few relatively lesser-known destinations also worth visiting. 

 

Bubastis

While it may not be as renowned an attraction as the Great Pyramid of Giza, Bubastis nevertheless compels visitors to stop and soak in the historical remnants that abound here. Excavations over the years have yielded the presence of numerous age-old sites, such as the Temple of Bastet — the goddess for whom Bubastis is considered to have been a nexus of worship — and the Palace of King Amenemhat III. The complex also comprises the Museum of Tal Basta Antiquities, which features artifacts, objects, and monuments that provide a glimpse of the past.  

 

The Tomb of Nefertari

Amid swathes of desert plains, you’ll discover vestiges of Ancient Egypt preserved at sites such as Nefertari’s tomb. While it may no longer contain the mummy of Ramesses II's beloved queen, the site manages to capture the interest of visitors owing to the spellbinding paintings adorning its storied interior. These not only attest to the artistic sublimity of Ancient Egypt but also enable history buffs to delve into the life and times of Nefertari and her remarkable character while also painting a vivid picture of the aspects associated with the afterlife.  

 

Cleopatra’s Bath

 Tucked amid Siwa’s towering date palms, this veritable hot spring is believed to have been favored by Cleopatra during her sojourn here. Dangle your feet in the circular stone pool or take a dip into its warm waters for a bout of rejuvenation. You can also choose to simply sit back and admire the slight ripples across the pool’s pristine surface. Owing to its association with the charismatic queen, the pool has established itself as a noteworthy stopover point in the area. 

 

City of the Dead

Cairo’s City of the Dead is an expansive network of burial sites that far predate the founding of Egypt’s capital. Serving as the resting place for the city’s ruling class as well as its general population, the vast necropolis is divided into different cemeteries and offers the opportunity to survey burial customs that prevailed in the past. Apart from the mausoleums and tombs, this fascinating complex also contains striking mosques and residential sections. Consider forgoing jaunts to establishments such as Cairo Jazz Club and indulge in some quiet contemplation as you stroll through this silent city.  

 

Wadi al-Weshwashy

Nestled amid the crevices of a rugged canyon, this stunning valley is one of the area’s best-kept secrets. Complete with a glistening lake that affords a welcome respite after the arduous hike up the barren terrain, Wadi al-Weshwashy delights with its serene environs and tranquil atmosphere. If you’re looking to unwind amid locales devoid of larger crowds, then this is the place for you.
