Tracing Denmark’s Viking Heritage
Experience Denmark’s rich Viking legacy at these sites:
Viking Ship Museum Roskilde
It goes without saying that ships were the backbone of the Vikings. This delightful museum, sitting on the water's edge at Roskilde Fjord showcases all there is to know about Viking ships. Focus of the museum are the five excavated ships from the 11th Century, known as Skuldelev Ships; perhaps the only original specimens of Viking ships anywhere. Beyond this, the museum has replicas as well as exhibits that detail the Vikings’ maritime history; a fascinating experience for adults as well as kids. Speaking of which, you can indulge your inner child with a day trip to Copenhagen nearby, at the Tivoli Gardens amusement park, one of the oldest in the world.
Jelling Monuments
Named after the town in which they were found, these ancient relics from the 10th Century are some of the most evocative remnants of the Viking Age in Scandinavia. Centerpiece of the monuments are the gigantic stones carved with runic inscriptions from the time. The largest of these was commissioned by King Harald Bluetooth as a memorial to his parents as well as his triumphant conquests of Denmark and Norway. Such is the cultural significance of this runestone that it is regarded as “Denmark’s Birth Certificate”. Other monuments at this UNESCO World Heritage site include a church as well as barrows that were created at the same time as the stones.
Ribe Viking Center
Travel back in time to the 8th Century to visit the flourishing Viking village of Ribe at this living history museum. With its authentic reconstructions, the center has managed to create an immersive experience of the life and time in Denmark’s oldest town. Prominent places to explore include the marketplace, the harbor as well as the Ansgar Church from the 10th Century. You can even try your hand at one of the delightful activities on offer from archery to warrior training, to feel like a real Viking. The on-site gift shop has a fantastic selection of Viking-era souvenirs, offering some of the most unique things for shopping in Denmark.
Trelleborg Viking Fortress
Circular in shape, ringfortresses, known as trelleborgs were a prominent form of fortification built by King Harald Bluetooth. Among the seven that have been found so far in the country, the one on the outskirts of the town of Slagelse is the best preserved example. The nearby museum details the history of the site and showcases the artifacts unearthed during excavations.
